Push Notifications on hacktivated 2G iPhone

UPDATE 8: It’s working!

Woehoe, DevTeam have made a fix for the Push Notifications for 2G users.

I’ve made a quick guide for people not knowing so much of Terminal, inject and you do not need an activated iPhone:

1. Download : http://rapidshare.com/files/252172112/PushFixPack.zip and unzip.

2. Copy  youtube-cert.bin , youtube-key.bin, push-cert.bin, push-key.bin, inject, nimble via SSH to /private/var/Keychains and set permissions of inject and nimble to 755.  (You change permissions in Cyberduck (Mac) by right clicking and then clicking ‘Info’. Windows users can use Filezilla or chmod.)

3. Make a copy of keychain-2.db and store it somewhere on you hard disk. Make sure that there is no keychain-2.db in /private/var/Keychains, because we’ll make a new one with ./inject

4. Run inject : Open Mobile Terminal on iPhone (download in Cydia) and type :

cd /   (make sure there is space between cd and /)

then:  cd /private/var/Keychains
then: ./inject

5. You see your iPhone will do some stuff and some letters will scroll.

6. Close Mobile Terminal

7. Delete the app you want to use with push (Beejive)

8. Reboot

9. Reinstall the app (Beejive), you will also have to re-enter your WiFi-password.

10. Test Push!

- youtube-cert.bin
- youtube-key.bin
- push-cert.bin
- push-key.bin

Push Notifications are working! 11. Re-enter all the passwords: mail, WiFi, …

UPDATE 7!

BigBoss reports problems with the 2G Push Notification and says:
“Push is broken if you hacktivated your phone (2G or 3G)”
“To get push working on your iPhone 3G, you must activate with any AT&T Sim”  = only 3G!
“No known push fix for the iPhone 2G”

Activating with any AT&T sim only works for 3G iPhones and NOT for 2G iPhones afaik.

If you have a 2G and succesfully receive Push, please comment and answer my mail afterwards.

I don’t have any more updates. If you do (contact with devteam or Bigboos,…) let me know in the comments.

UPDATE 4!
@theoneneo has made this screenshot:

UPDATE3!

@theoneneo has contacted @planetbeing (a member of the DevTeam):

@theoneneo
Are you guys aware of the Push Notification Service bug in combination with iPhone 2G+Pwnage Tool? Thanks
http://bit.ly/dlGKJ

@Planetbeing:
No, we actually didn’t. o.o we had a lot of problems with YouTube too so this isn’t that surprising.

At least they know about it now…

UPDATE2!

I’ve installed Redsn0w on my iPhone 2G. I’m still not receiving any push notifications on 2G Hacktivated iPhone.

UPDATE!

I’ve Pwned my iPhone 2G with Pwnage (Jailbreak) to the new 3.0 software and still no Push Notifications!!

The pop-up is gone, but I’m not receiving any push notifications.

Someone with a 2G who’s got it working?

photo.jpg

Problems with the update to OS3.0

Users with a “hacktivated” iPhone 2G, that is not officially activated with AT&T, O2, … can not use Push notifications.
You get this pop-up, telling you to connect to iTunes.

“Connect to iTunes to Use Push Notifications”

If you connect to iTunes and try it again it won’t work. A reboot doesn’t help either.

Another problem is YouTube not working, but DevTeam is aware of this and will fix it.

I hope they will also fix this push notifications-problem !!!

UPDATE! Look what Big Boss replied to me on the forum of DevTeam :

  1. READ WHAT IT SAYS
It will be working in the new quickpwn!

  2. Where are you guys seeing that 2G push will be fixed in the next updat? On bigboss blog, it says”
No known push fix for the iPhone 2G

  3. OMG…

Does it mean, the info about newest QuickPwn is false?
No push fix for 2G for now?
    Man…

  4. There will be NO push notification fix! Because it the whole thing is in Apples hands!
The Apple servers check a unique certificate and key that you get when you activate in there database. So the only fix for this activating the phone.
Or if someone crackes the server or gets the Apple private key. But even then they can easily repair that because they own the servers.

I hope I made something clear here.

  5. This does not make sense. I have a 2g on AT&T. But it’s hacktivated so I can use an unodficial data plan. It’s not working. Not even of wifi. Shouldn’t work on wifi at least?

  6. But isnt “Quickpwn” now called “Redsnow” !??
damn this is such a let down…

  7. Mitch – There is a fix for hactivated 3G phones – so your explanation holds no water.

  8. I repaired the problem by using an official unactivated SIM (with no contract on it and a restored phone without restoring the backup). It passed the first activation (i could use the phone as an iPod touch) but it then “said waiting for activation this may take several minutes” and then i redsnowed it et voilà push is working on my 2G iPhone

PS:Is it me or comment order is all wrong on this page?

  9. Indeed. I don’t know what wordpress did with the comments. I’ll post your semi-solution on the blog tomorrow afte testing it out myself.

  10. As Bram point out i must make it clear that i use an official carrier SIM even if my account on it is no more active

  12. Do you think a GoPhone SIM would work?

  13. Did you choose the Unlock option in redsn0w?

  14. So any new updates…..the most recent news is that it will work with qckpwn???
So was that before? I’m kinda confused about the most recent update. Thanks, cool blog, from one student to another!!!!

  15. never mind….the order of comments is all out of whack, and found my answer… :-) , good luck with studies, I have an exam in few days!!!

  16. Wish I could edit my post – will this work for my unofficial carrier? I’m on T-Mobile USA.

  17. So Neckaros you really got it to work with a 2G ?
    Thats big news!
are you sure push is really working? i. e. did you recieve a push message?
    please elaborate!

    Thanks a lot!!!

  18. But you did use your iPhone with a contract before and therefore officially activated it at some point right?

  19. soo if i have a 2g iphone and i do all again with a att sim card push will not work?

  20. sooo you have a jailbreak iphone 2g with push working?

  21. thanks for keeping us updated, I think I’ll just be following you and a next site to keep me informed. Much appreciated. I want push like NOW

  22. planetbeing tweeted:
Unfortunately, you guys are at the mercy of our attention spans. 3Gs is new and shiny, and push will have to wait. :( @anietoabout

We’ll DEFINITELY work on it though, because we put the community’s needs in high regard, but there are only so many hours in the day.

  23. Same issue on my iPhone 2G in Germany. I tried different things. One last thing I’m going to try:
What if I do a restore with the stock iPhone 1,1_3.0 firmware. Activate it with a valid SIM (my case german T-Mobile). So the certificate for push notification would get installed.
Unlock the iPhone through redsn0w would hopefully not replace the entire firmware and therefore keep the installed certificate for push notification on it.
As far as I know redsn0w does only do changes on the phone while pwnage replaces the firmware, right?
    Did anyone tried that?

  24. That should work.

    Sent from my iPhone

  25. Ok, done it. I can proove, its working this way. So its possible then to use app push notifications on 2G using redsn0w and temporary valid sim card for activting.

  26. Did teleharry just say that he activated his 2g iphone and has it unlocked for use on a different carrier and has push notification working?

  27. Teleharry!
I assume you had a Tmobile Germany contract before with your 2g right?
Is your iPhone also from Germany or is it a US AT&T phone?

I have a US 2G iPhone with a AT&T card lying around somewhere.
Im am also in germany but I think using a Tmobile card wont get me anywhere…
    :(

  28. Yes, thats right. That phone was bought originally in Germany with a T-Mobile contract.
Did you try activating (not hactivating) first with your AT&T card? If it doesn’t just try then with the T-Mobile xtra card. Nothing to loose.
Once it gets activated yoo won, and can do redsn0wing in order to unlock it and use any SIM.

  29. Yes, I can use any Sim and have push notification working on 2G.

  30. Hopefully we will get a fix soon! I want my push AIM!

  31. Thanks to this site I have working notification on my Tmobile Iphone 3g

I have an old ATT sim, restored, activated, jailbroke, ultrasnowed, and have sweet push notifications now..

Going to try it on my sons 2g next…

  32. Any news on the 2G? Did it work?

  33. My explanation is correct you have to be in their database. The method you say is for phones that where activated before so they are still listed in the database.

  34. Oh weehh, such a fix for the old iphone 2G would be really great. Acutally backgrounder for OS 3.0 helps out :)

Thought I would try using this old deactivated sim, and I followed the directions for my iPhone 3G running on TMobile now.

    1) I placed the AT&T sim in the iPhone
    2) Restored to 3.0 firmware
    3) it allowed me to enter the springboard and said awaiting activation so I dismissed it and went into settings and turned OFF the 3G signal.
    4) Ran Redsn0w
    5) went into cydia and ran Ultrasn0w
    6) turned off iPhone
    7) Swapped out AT&T sim with my T-Mobile sim 8) turned on iPhone…
    now it says ACTIVATION COMPLETE!!!
    and PUSH WORKS!!

So just so everyone knows, the at&t sim DOES NOT have to be current or activated!!! So if you have an old one laying around, put it to use!!
thanks to whomever found this little workaround!!!!

  38. I’ve tried that tutorial you’re referring to, but I had to enter my iTunes login and password to activate and I was a bit afraid as that also contains my mastercard information.
Was this the case for you too?
Could you just continue without activating a mobile plan?

Thanks. If I can get this to work, I’ll post screenshots on the blog.

  39. Have anyone tried this on yhe 2G? Did it work?
    Thanks.

  40. soooo? any news???

  41. It is for the 3G, not the 2G…There is no work around and there won’t be till the dev-team figures something out

  42. I can confirm that restoring my Iphone 2G then putting in a used but cancelled AT&T sim card and installing AIM let me then accept Push over WiFi. I then with iPhone still on and connected to iTunes took out the AT&T sim and put in T-Mobile and then used redsn0w to jailbreak (already was unlocked due to previous jailbreak). I can now confirm that Push notifications work over the T-Mobile network.

  43. Did the AT&T card you used ever was active in an iPhone?

  44. Have push notifications working on 2g and my 3g. Just use the instructions from Starblue and it works great

  45. I had it where I had push email after a restore then ran redsn0w to unlock. Swapped SIMs and now my push is gone. Never got to try AIM push or anything. Guess I shall wait. Seems like since they are delaying ultrasn0w for the 3GS, push is their next project…Can only hope

  46. Hello,
I have the iPhone 2G and the PNS works on my iPhone after unlocking via redsn0w.
    Here some informations.
The iPhone is an original one locked for T-Mobile in Germany.
I restored it to iPhone OS 3.0 and afterwards I activated the iPhone with a prepaid Sim from T-Mobile Germany. After activation I unlocked/activted and installed cydia with redsn0w and the PNS is still working. Now I can receive push notifications with my o2 Germany Sim Card.

So I understand that this is the same way how you can PNS for iPhone 3G.

  47. I have 2G push working using an inactive AT&T sim card. I’m on ‘Taiwan Mobile’ and it’s working via wifi and through cell network. The phone is an old 2G that i brought over from the Stats. I had to try 3 times before I got everything to work and stay working. Push was working until I restored as an exisiting iPhone… Then Beejive, IM+, AIM among a few other would crash when i started up. HOW I GOT IT TO WORK: I set it up as a new phone ( rather than doing a restore )

    My steps were:

    1) insert old inactive AT&T sim card
    2) restore with 3.0 in iTunes
    3) after restore, i let iTunes detect the iphone again, and it will say that it’s waiting for activation. I ’slide to unlock’ to cancel the message and get into the iphone’s icon screen.
    4) next ran Redsnow

Now it’s all working fine… except Beejive’s network still seems unstable and disconnects a lot. Push works great, however.

(another note… my friend says that he got his 2G working with push using Redsnow and TW Mobile’s sim card… his problem that he has to turn off push or he won’t receive incoming calls)

  48. Andy, will this work if i use any at&t sim card…
I’ve bought 2g iphone from a friend of mine…is it possible to activate push by using any at&t sim card?

  49. Sry, did not work for me :/
